Commons clash over Scottish banknotes

In every other way, the legal tender of a banknote does not affect its use. But the Lib Dems say there have been instances when traders in England have refused Scottish notes, claiming they were not "legal tender" and this could not happen if the notes were given the same legal backing as Bank of England ones.Malcolm Bruce (Gordon) said at Commons question time: "It is high time that Scottish banknotes were legally acceptable throughout the UK."He told Mr Browne: "If dollars and euros are acceptable to traders, surely Scottish notes should be. "Will you endeavour to make sure this position is brought to an end?"The Scottish Secretary replied: "The law is that Scottish banknotes as a method of payment enjoy exactly the same status as all other methods of payment across the United Kingdom."That is not widely known but people should know that and accept that."I know some of my fellow countrymen have experienced on occasion the refusal of these banknotes.

Weeklong Events Promote Healthy Body Image

UCSB Healthy Eating and Living program faculty adviser Joanna Hill said college students are particularly vulnerable to having an eating disorder or acquiring a negative body image.

"Eating disorders usually begin or happen before the age of 25 so the college-aged population is the most likely age to develop an eating disorder," Hill said. "This is the time where one has the highest chance of getting a negative body image, so this is the age where it is important to get the right information on the subject of eating disorders."

Hill also said that the beach location of UCSB and cultural beauty stereotypes that are allegedly prevalent in California may serve as major factors that make UCSB students particularly susceptible to body image issues.

"I think that [the pressure for aesthetic perfection] has a lot to do with the California atmosphere," Hill said.

Clam chowder is great chow for Super Bowl

This year's Super Bowl is shaping up to be the Clash of the Clam Chowders, if you'd like a menu to reflect the match-up.

Patriots fans can boast that the creamy New England version is older. Giants fans can note that the tomato-based Manhattan chowder is more colorful.

Culinary references seem to favor one or the other. The "Joy of Cooking" (Penguin Books, $18) uses the Manhattan style as its main recipe, adding that most New Englanders consider Manhattan clam chowder "an illegitimate child." Hmmm ... sounds like a little trash talking there.

Cook's Illustrated's "American Classics" (Boston Common Press, $29.95) contains two recipes for New England clam chowder but none for the Manhattan version. Maybe the fact that the company test kitchen is located just outside Boston has something to do with that.

Tarsands 'most destructive project on Earth': report

The more oil we make, the less energy we have.

As a country with a cold climate that has spent the last 20 years converting to natural gas as a means of heating our homes, we need need to stop and think about this for a minute. When we have run out of natural gas, all the money we are making from the tarsands is not going to do us any good at all.

Molina is set to pursue his golden dream

JUPITER, FLA. — Coming off surgery that ended his season early, catcher Yadier Molina decided the best way to protect the health of his knee was to improve his overall fitness.

Molina arrived at spring training Wednesday, a day before Cardinals pitchers and catchers report. And, in the words of his pitching coach, he "looked great, doesn't he?" The 25-year-old catcher not only sports fresh ink on a four-year contract but also a slimmer, lighter build.

All the better for his knees, he said.

"I'm 25, and I need to be thinking about not only this season but in two more years, three more years, how is that knee going to be?" Molina said. "I need to keep it in good shape and that means I need to keep myself in good shape. I really feel good right now, and I think I can maintain this." .

Archer Daniels Midland Company, Bayer CropScience and Daimler to ...

Monheim. Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), Bayer CropScience AG and Daimler AG plan to jointly explore the potential for a biodiesel industry based on Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.). A respective Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the companies. Jatropha, a tropical plant from the Euphorbia family, is seen by the three cooperating partners as a promising alternative energy feedstock for the production of biodiesel. Biodiesel derived from Jatropha nut kernels has properties similar to those of biofuels obtained from oilseed rapes. It is also characterized by a positive CO2 balance and can thus contribute to protecting the climate.

In this project, the companies are seeking to develop production and quality standards for Jatropha-based biofuel. ADM is running several biodiesel refineries worldwide.

I was referred to as a "leery arborist" in a recent article about the declining Torrey pine trees at the Cardiff library (Feb. 10, "Brew of worm castings applied to Cardiff trees"). Some of the statements made by George Hahn in that article need to be evaluated based on botanical and scientific knowledge. Here are the facts. You be the judge.1. "Within three weeks, you'll have needles coming out." Yes, it is called spring when new growth occurs on most plants. Trees form up to 90 percent of their current growth increment in the six to eight weeks after new leaves are formed. The stored energy (primarily starch) is located at the base of the leaf buds the growing season before the leaf buds sprout. Have you ever cut a branch from a deciduous flowering tree and place it in a vase in the house? It blooms and often leafs out due to stored energy even without roots.

Expected revenues fall short in Rochester

All you've got to do is look around this city, look around the nation, and see what's happening."

Ward 1 Councilor Ray Varney said he expects the idea to be discussed at next month's meeting. "You've got to somehow get some additional revenue or reduce expenditures if you want to offset what you know to be losses."

The city administration hasn't called for a budget freeze, but the option hasn't been taken off the table. "We need to determine where we're at and really evaluate things," Finance Director Brian LeBrun said Thursday. "I'm not willing to use that term at the time, but it might happen."

To avoid going that route, LeBrun is going through budgets "with a fine-tooth comb" to see where there may be additional revenue or where there can be savings.

Top 4 Eating Diseases

3.Bulimia is a condition in which the person, instead of fasting, crams even 15,000 calories in two hours' time. The person eats 3 to 30 times the normal amount of food. Then, the person eliminates what she/he ate, by vomiting or taking laxatives/diuretics, or executes difficult physical exercising for burning the extra-calories. Usually, the patient eats secretly, when its anxiety is calmed down, and, after consuming the food, experiences again the feeling of guilt. The wrong use of the laxatives can destroy the gut bacteria, provoking inflammations and infections. Frequent vomitting can provoke dehydration, tooth decay, esophagus lesions and even heart insufficiency. Usually, those with bulimia have a normal weight or they are a little over weight. It affects especially women aged 15-24, and can be triggered/accelerated by stressful events, like insatisfaction or break-up, boredom or loneliness.
