| Stop Chasing High-Tech Cheaters
This is in an impoverished, inner city school, mind you; 92% of those kids went on to college. I receive emails from many of them still, saying that the education they received FROM US (with our pathetic technology) prepared them better for the rigor of academia they have met in university than anything they could imagine. Possibly, they say this because they were not exposed to, and can therefore not imagine, anything else. Or because they were my pets then, hence the emails now. But the fact that 92% of them went on with their educations, and 75% of them stayed in higher ed (as opposed to those who flunk out after failing to make it out of their Bridge program), I think, says something. 2) I now teach in a district with a generous complement of technology and a strong commitment to training our kids to work in a world whose technology does not even exist yet.
Grief-stricken? How to deal with pet death
Losing a pet is a subject most pet owners never want to think about, but unfortunately must deal with at some point. I personally had to deal with the loss of two dogs, both more than six years ago. I can honestly say that I have never gotten over it — I've just gotten used to it. Even though one of my beautiful dogs, Shiner, was riddled with cancer, and my other best friend, Hampton, lived to a miraculous 20 years old, there was never a right time to say goodbye. I feel it is so important to let people who are connected to their beloved pets know that this kind of loss is, in most cases, equal to losing a family member. Because, after all, pets are a part of families, aren't they? There are people out there, like wonderful Dr. Stephanie LaFarge, featured in our segment, who are there for you 24/7 to help you cope with this devastating loss.

Bitter Taste Receptors Activated By Food Peptides
Researchers from the Monell Center and Tokyo University of Agriculture have used a novel molecular method to identify chemical compounds from common foods that activate human bitter taste receptors. The findings, published in the journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, provide a practical means to manipulate food flavor in general and bitter taste in particular. "Identification of bitter taste compounds and their corresponding receptors opens doors to screening for specific bitter receptor inhibitors," said senior author Liquan Huang, PhD, a molecular biologist at Monell. "Such inhibitors can be used to suppress unpleasantness and thereby increase palatability and acceptance of health-promoting bitter foods, such as green vegetables or soy products." While a little bitterness is often considered a desirable component of a food's flavor, extensive bitterness can limit food acceptance.
